Effect of acupuncture on the short term memory

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives：This study was performed to know whether acupuncture on acupoints GB20, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, ST4 that are known to calm spirit and used frequently in clinic could be effective on improvement of short term memory.
Materials & Methods：29 adults were subjected to Digit span test, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale test, and Nonsense syllable test. Subjects were assigned to control group and the five acupuncture groups randomly.
Results：In the Digit span test, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, and ST4 groups have shown significant predominance compared to the control group；while in the nonsense syllable test, GB20 exerted significant effect compared to the control group. However, in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale test, there was no significant difference.
Conclusions：Results of this study suggest that GB20, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, ST4 acupunctures may be an effective treatment for the improvement of short term memory. However, the difference of effectiveness should be considered in the clinical treatment.
