Effect of acupuncture on the short term memory

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives£ºThis study was performed to know whether acupuncture on acupoints GB20, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, ST4 that are known to calm spirit and used frequently in clinic could be effective on improvement of short term memory.
Materials & Methods£º29 adults were subjected to Digit span test, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale test, and Nonsense syllable test. Subjects were assigned to control group and the five acupuncture groups randomly.
Results£ºIn the Digit span test, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, and ST4 groups have shown significant predominance compared to the control group£»while in the nonsense syllable test, GB20 exerted significant effect compared to the control group. However, in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale test, there was no significant difference.
Conclusions£ºResults of this study suggest that GB20, GV20-GV21-GV22, Tonifying Pericardium Meridian, BL10, ST4 acupunctures may be an effective treatment for the improvement of short term memory. However, the difference of effectiveness should be considered in the clinical treatment.
